De kathedraal is gelegen in het oude centrum van de stad. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in de periode 1470-1551 en is gebouwd als kloosterkerk. Bij binnenkomst is de Mariakapel meteen rechts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het Mariabeeld van Kevelaer omringd door medaillons. Dit kunstwerk is afkomstig van het voormalig Maria-altaar van de Utrechtse, 19e eeuwse Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ten Hemelopnemingkerk, die in 1972 is gesloten. De medaillons zijn in 1887 gemaakt door het atelier van Frederich Wilhelm Mengelberg (1837-1919). Sinds 1992 staat het Mariabeeld in de kathedraal.
